Why dog collar hardware matters more than you think

Why dog collar hardware matters more than you think

When most people choose a dog collar, they look at the obvious things first.

The colour. The style. Whether it suits their dog’s personality (because yes, somehow dogs absolutely do have colours).

And while we fully support your dog looking ridiculously cute, there’s one part of a collar that often gets overlooked.

The hardware.

The buckle. The D-rings. The stainless steel rivets. The little pieces doing the very important job of keeping your dog safely attached to you.

Because a dog collar is only as strong as its weakest part.

The part of a dog collar that usually fails first

Before Oh Vienna existed, I thought a collar was just a collar. Then I adopted Vienna.

A beach-loving, mud-finding, rolling in dead stuff rescue dog who quickly taught me that not all dog gear is designed for dogs who actually behave like dogs.

After enough adventures, I started noticing something. It wasn’t always the collar strap that was the problem - it was the hardware.

Broken clips. Rusty parts. Weak attachment points.

The small pieces were often the first things to give up.

And when your dog suddenly decides a rabbit needs investigating, another dog looks interesting, or there is a very suspicious smell they must immediately pull towards, those small pieces suddenly become very important.

Plastic vs metal dog collar buckles

A lot of dog collars use plastic buckles because they’re lightweight, affordable and easy to use. And for some dogs, they do the job.

But if you have an adventure dog, a strong dog, a dog who swims, rolls, pulls or treats every walk like a personal expedition, hardware matters.

Plastic buckles can become brittle over time and are often the first point of failure.

That’s why when we designed the Vienna Collar, we chose a quick-release zinc alloy buckle instead.

Because the buckle is not just a detail. It’s the thing holding everything together.

We put our collar to the test

We didn’t want to just say our collars were strong. We wanted to know.

So we put the Vienna Collar through strength testing against a popular leather dog collar brand to see how it performed under pressure.

The result?

The Vienna Collar held up to 233kg of force.

Because words like “durable” and “strong” are easy to put on a product page.

We wanted to build a collar that could actually back them up.

Why the D-rings matter too

The buckle gets a lot of attention, but your dog’s lead attachment point is just as important.

Every time your dog pulls, stops suddenly, gets excited or changes direction, pressure goes through that connection point.

That’s why the Vienna Collar uses two stainless steel D-rings.

  1. One for your dog’s ID tag.
  2.  One for attaching your lead.

No overcrowded hardware. No trying to clip your lead around tags.

Just a stronger, simpler setup.

The D-rings are secured with stainless steel rivets to hold them firmly in place, helping create a stronger connection point where it matters most: between your dog, their lead and you.

What about waterproof dog collars?

Strength matters, but durability isn’t only about pulling power.

A collar also has to survive everyday dog life.

  • The swimming.
  • The mud.
  • The rain.
  • The mystery substances nobody wants to identify.

Traditional fabric collars can hold moisture and smells, especially if your dog spends a lot of time outdoors.

Our waterproof dog collars are made from reinforced PVC webbing, which means they’re easy to wipe clean, quick to dry and don’t hold onto odour the same way.

Basically, less “wet dog smell living permanently around your dog’s neck.”

Everyone wins.

A good collar should last, not end up in landfill

One thing we found frustrating with traditional collars was that one small broken part often meant replacing the entire thing.

A buckle breaks?

 New collar.

It stretches out of shape?

 New collar.

That never made sense to us.

That’s why our hardware is designed to be replaceable.

Because a tiny part shouldn’t be the reason a perfectly good collar gets thrown away. If you need new parts, just message us, we're happy to help.

The Vienna test

Of course, Vienna has her own testing process.

It’s less scientific.

It mostly involves:

✔️ salty ocean swims - you know the type that makes everything feel crusty?
✔️ muddy adventures - mud spas are life
✔️ rolling in questionable smells - I will never forget that dead fish smell

✔️ pulling towards rabbit droppings like a maniac

But that’s exactly why Oh Vienna exists.

We wanted dog gear that looked good, but could handle dogs being dogs.

Water-proof dog collar

So what should you look for in a durable dog collar?

If you’re choosing a collar, look beyond the colour.

Ask:

✔️ Is the buckle strong?
✔️ Is the hardware rust-resistant?
✔️ Are the lead attachment points secure?
✔️ Can parts be repaired or replaced?
✔️ Will it handle your dog’s actual lifestyle?

A strong collar is only part of the equation - having the right everyday essentials matters too. SPCA NZ includes a collar and lead as part of preparing for your dog, because safe, reliable gear is one of those basics every dog owner needs.

Because the best dog collar isn’t the one that only looks good on day one.

It’s the one still going strong after every muddy walk, beach trip and “what have you rolled in?” moment.

Explore Oh Vienna waterproof dog collars - designed with a metal buckle, stainless steel hardware and replaceable parts for real-life dog adventures.
