Waterproof Dog Collars vs Nylon Dog Collars: Which Is Better for Grubby Dogs?
Share
Some dogs gently trot around puddles.
Other dogs see mud, salt water, wet grass, duck ponds and mysterious park sludge as a personal invitation.
If your dog falls into the second category, their collar matters more than you think. Because while a traditional nylon collar might look cute on day one, give it a few beach swims, a roll in something suspicious and one wet winter walk, and suddenly you’ve got a soggy little stink necklace living rent-free around your dog’s neck.
So, what’s better for messy dogs: a waterproof dog collar or a nylon dog collar?
Let’s get into it.
First, What’s the Difference?
The main difference is the material.
Nylon dog collars are usually made from woven fabric. They’re soft, lightweight and common, but they can absorb water, dirt and odour.
Waterproof dog collars are usually made from materials like PVC-coated webbing or similar easy-clean materials. Instead of soaking everything up, they repel moisture and can usually be rinsed or wiped clean.
In very simple terms:
Nylon collars absorb the adventure. Waterproof collars survive it.
Nylon Dog Collars: The Good Bits
Nylon collars are popular for a reason. They’re usually affordable, lightweight and available in every colour and pattern under the sun.
They can be a good option for dogs who stay mostly dry, clean and civilised.
You know the type. Dogs who politely avoid puddles. Dogs who don’t roll in dead things. Dogs who do not treat every body of water like a spiritual calling.
For low-mess dogs, nylon can be perfectly fine.

Nylon Dog Collars: The Not-So-Good Bits
For messy dogs, nylon collars can become a problem pretty quickly.
Because nylon is fabric-based, it can hold onto:
- Water
- Mud
- Sand
- Dirt
- Wet dog smell
- Mystery park substances we will not be investigating further
Once a nylon collar gets damp, it can take longer to dry. If your dog is regularly swimming, rolling or getting filthy, that dampness can turn into odour.
And if you’ve ever sniffed a collar and immediately regretted every decision that led to that moment, you already know.
Nylon collars can also get grubby-looking over time. Even after washing, they may not bounce back to looking fresh.
Waterproof Dog Collars: The Good Bits
Waterproof dog collars are designed for the dogs who live a little harder.
They’re a great option if your dog:
- Swims often
- Loves the beach
- Rolls in mud
- Gets wet on walks
- Has sensitive humans who cannot cope with collar smell
- Treats cleanliness as more of a loose suggestion
Because waterproof collars do not absorb water like fabric collars, they are much easier to clean. Most of the time, you can rinse them under water or wipe them down and move on with your life.
That’s the dream, really. Less scrubbing. Less stink. Less pretending the collar “probably has one more week in it”.

Why Waterproof Collars Are Better for Smelly, Muddy Dogs
The biggest win is odour control.
A waterproof collar does not soak up moisture and grime the same way a nylon collar can. That means less wet-dog smell sitting around your dog’s neck after every swim, beach walk or damp morning stomp.
At Oh Vienna, our collars are made from soft PVC webbing, which is waterproof, odour-resistant and easy to clean. They’re built for dogs who get properly stuck into life, without making your house smell like the inside of a wet sock.
You can shop our range of waterproof dog collars if your dog has personally declared war on clean accessories.
What About Comfort?
A good waterproof collar should not feel stiff, sharp or awkward. That’s one of the reasons we use soft PVC webbing. It has the practical benefits of being waterproof and easy to clean, while still being comfortable enough for everyday wear.
The most important thing is fit. No collar, waterproof or nylon, will feel good if it is too tight, too loose or sitting awkwardly.
As a general rule, you should be able to fit two fingers between your dog’s neck and their collar. If you’re not sure where to start, check our dog collar size guide before ordering.
For an external fit reference, Big Brown Paws also explains the two-finger collar fit test clearly in their guide to finding the perfect collar fit.
Are Waterproof Collars Easy to Clean?
Yes. This is where waterproof collars really earn their keep.
After a muddy walk, beach swim or suspicious roll, simply rinse or wipe the collar clean.
No soaking.
No scrubbing fabric.
No waiting three business days for the collar to dry.
No quietly gagging while pretending it’s “not that bad”.
For busy dog owners, this is the whole point.
Are Waterproof Dog Collars Durable?
They should be.
A good waterproof dog collar should handle everyday walks, wet weather, beach trips and general dog nonsense without falling apart.
Oh Vienna collars are made with waterproof PVC webbing, a quick-release metal buckle, dual stainless steel D-rings and replaceable hardware. That means if small parts need replacing over time, the whole collar does not need to be binned.
Because throwing away a full collar over one little part? Rude.
When Is a Nylon Collar Still Fine?
Nylon is not evil. Let’s not be dramatic.
A nylon collar can be totally fine if your dog:
- Mostly stays dry
- Does not swim often
- Has very short, clean walks
- Is not prone to rolling in mud, puddles or mystery smells
- Needs a lightweight occasional-use collar
But if your dog is wet, sandy, muddy or stinky more often than not, nylon may start making your life harder than it needs to be.
So, Which Is Better for Grubby Dogs?
For messy dogs, waterproof dog collars are the better choice.
They are easier to clean, more odour-resistant and better suited to dogs who swim, roll, hike, explore and generally act like tiny chaos goblins with paws.
Nylon collars still have their place, but for active dogs and NZ adventures, a waterproof collar is simply more practical.
The Oh Vienna Verdict
If your dog’s hobbies include beach swims, muddy walks, damp grass zoomies and finding the one gross thing in a perfectly nice park, choose waterproof.
Your dog gets to keep being feral.
You get a collar that is easy to clean, comfortable for everyday wear and far less likely to smell like regret.
Everyone wins.
